Hospitality30 kWp
Coastal Safari & Hospitality Resort — 30kWp Off-Grid Solar + Water Heating
The Challenge
A boutique eco-lodge and safari camp on Kenya's coast was fully generator-dependent — running 40kVA diesel gensets around the clock to power 24 chalets, a restaurant, spa facilities, and a 12,000L/day desalination unit. Generator fuel and maintenance was costing over KES 380,000 per month, creating a significant sustainability gap for a property marketing itself as an eco-destination.
The Solution
Pergamon Energy delivered a 30kWp hybrid solar + solar water heating system:
- 120 × 250W monocrystalline panels on purpose-built elevated carport and roof structures
- 36kW hybrid inverter array with 3-phase output to match existing distribution
- 48V, 1,200Ah LiFePO₄ battery bank (57.6kWh usable) running overnight and generator backup
- 24 × 200L solar thermal collectors replacing electric water heaters in all chalets
- Generator soft-start integration — generator only activates below 20% battery state-of-charge
- SCADA remote monitoring with alert-to-phone for operations manager
The Result
| Metric | Generator Only | Post-Solar |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly fuel + maintenance | KES 380,000 | KES 62,000 |
| Generator run-hours/day | 24h | 2–4h (battery top-up only) |
| Water heating electricity load | Included above | Zero (solar thermal) |
| Estimated annual CO₂ saving | — | ~220 tonnes |
| Simple payback | — | 4.6 years |
The lodge now prominently features its solar credentials in its sustainability report and has seen an uptick in eco-conscious bookings since the installation.
